Kilify - June 7/22 10 - by Erica & Peter.

Firstly, I would like to record our appreciation to all Neilson and Mnarani Hotel staff for making our Kenyan fortnight a superb holiday - even the late 'rainy season' storms could not dampen the special atmosphere of this delightful venue! The Kilify ethos was so refreshing to experience . . . good accommodation and food, ever cheerful staff, well maintained and varied sailing kit, a holiday programme to suit both sailing and non sailing enthusiasts and above all being part of a great Club 'family'. If you like a smaller scale beachclub with character 'thrown in', then this is the holiday for you!! Even the long Monarch flight all seems worthwhile, when you walk into the hotel reception area and look out on that fabulous infinity pool view!!

Secondly a few Kilify comments/tips for what they are worth, as we appreciated info before we went:- (1) The plan to change to all inclusive dinners in Nov is a good decision for this Club, as the local area does not provide evening alternatives. However, splendid substantial snacks are always available both in restaurant and beach bars - both drinks and food are excellent value for money ! (2) The Hotel staff responsible for the social entertainment(the'Animators')offer many opportunities for non sailing activities but you do have to approach them if you are interested in any activities 'on the board' - eg. super aquarobics everyday, but do request sessions otherwise they are unlikely to happen! (3) The Kenyan staff really enjoy enhancing special celebrations eg Birthdays -'go with it' and enjoy your room being decorated, and being feted with song and cake!
(4)The 2 day Safari package booked through Neilson was great. Aruba Lodge is 'a gem' of a place for the overnight hospitality! However, perhaps worth mentioning that the long trip to Lugard Falls on second day itinary, only results in VERY distant viewing of crocs and hippos (need zoom lens to really pick out animals)! Had we have known this, we would have negotiated with our very amenable driver, to spend more time around the Lodge area in the hope of seeing the lions we had not, and never did see! If, of course, you have seen all the big game you want, then the Lugard landscape is an interesting diversion. (5) Most of us enjoy buying souvenirs and good deals can be negotiated at the craft centres en route to Safari. However, if you like us, want to support the local community then we would recommend . . . Bush Baby is an enterprising local lad who sells his wares around the pool area on a weekly basis (was Mon). He is a joy to talk to and personally makes all he sells (beaded jewellery, ebony carving and plaited palm sunhats made to order!) . . . also if the Thursday 'in house' craft market rather daunts you with pressure sales and lack of variety, then simply take a visit to Mama Joyce's small but well stocked souvenir shop literally a few steps from the Hotel entrance (cross the main road and walk straight ahead into Mnarani village and she is first on the right). Joyce is such a delightful character to meet and she will allow you time to browse without undue pressure and then negotiate a good price! (6) Do take time out from your sailing, to explore the local area! The organised bike rides are one good way. If cycling is 'not your thing', then be assured 'on foot' exploring of Mnarani village (opposite Club) and Kilify town (over the Bridge, then turn right) is both a safe (we went as a couple) and a manageable distance to walk. There is so much of interest to see and their different lifestyle is very humbling.

Excellent holiday. Jo and her team were great and the hotel staff were very nice and could not do enough to help you. The Spa was also very good and relaxing. The hotel runs an optional tab system which is really handy. You can always see the running total and just have one bill to pay at the end, you can even use it in the small shop! I would certainly visit again and happy to recommend this holiday to anyone.

Wow what a holdiay! We had a ball, fantastic location, hotel staff couldn't have been friendlier, the Kenyans are lovely happy smiley people, Jo & Neilson staff were just brilliant and our fellow guests were a hoot. Thanks you all for a wonderful holiday and for looking after us, as you can read we can only highly recommend Kilifi. Thank you all...
