Beginner's guide to wakeboarding
Wakeboarding is a high-octane, adrenaline-inducing mix of water skiing, surfing, and snowboarding. It can be fast and furious, but the good news is that it’s surprisingly easy to get to grips with the basics – total newbies can be up and wakeboarding within a few hours. Want to know more about wakeboarding for beginners? We’ve got everything you need right here.
How to: Wakeboarding Beginner Tips
Wakeboarding is possibly one of the coolest watersports around, once you’ve had a go, you’ll be coming back for more. For the wakeboarding beginner, you’re basically towed behind a ski boat on a board that’s bigger than a skateboard, smaller than a surfboard and a bit wider than a snowboard. Once comfortable being towed behind the boat, you edge the board out to the side of the boat and cut back across the ‘wake’ to the other side. We talked to Ellie, who first learnt to wakeboard (age 12) on her annual Neilson summer holiday. She explains that how after learning to water ski she was up for a new challenge. She liked the idea of wakeboarding and decided to give it a go for the first time in the warm, flat water of the Ionian Sea in Greece at the Retreat Beachclub in Sivota. Here, she shares some of her top tips on how to wakeboard.
Where to wakeboard in the UK
An exhilarating mash-up of water skiing, surfing and snowboarding, wakeboarding has taken the world of watersports by storm. Strap a wakeboard to your feet and keep tight hold as you’re towed at speed across the water, riding the choppy waves of the boat’s wake. Wakeboarding is super accessible, with some of the world’s best wakeparks springing up all over the UK. Many now use high-speed cables to tow you, installing fun obstacles to recreate the effect of the boat’s wake. You can hire all the equipment you need, and expert instructors are on hand to show you the ropes. Expect to get wet, work your body hard and have a tonne of fun! Whether you’ve caught the bug at one of our beachclubs or fancy having a go before your holiday, there’s a wakepark to suit your ability and experience not too far away. Here are a few of our favourites.

Frequently asked questions
For the wakeboarding beginner, the sport is best described as being towed behind a motorboat at speeds of up to 25mph whilst attached to a board that’s bigger than a skateboard, smaller than a surfboard and a bit wider than a snowboard!
You wear bindings to secure your feet to the board. As the boat accelerates, you slot in between the wake (the waves created by the boat) until you’re comfortable being towed behind the boat. When you’re ready you then edge the board out to the side of the boat and cut back across the wake to the other side - going from wake-to-wake to perform manoeuvres, such as jumps, flips, and spins.
Children who can already wakeboard can join in with any of our regular free sessions (up to two free tows per person per week) at Levante Beach, Messini, Vounaki or Alana Beach Clubs. Children can also upgrade to the bronze, silver, gold packages.
All children must be at least 120cm tall to enjoy wakeboarding family holidays.
Wakeboarding is generally considered to be slightly harder than water skiing. When water skiing, you ride the water with your feet parallel and your body facing forwards, whilst when wakeboarding, your feet are perpendicular to the board and your body faces forward, which can make it trickier to get the hang of.
However, both wakeboarding and water skiing are lots of fun - and our experienced instructors will help you every step of the way, even if you’ve never done any water sports before! Why not give both a go and see which one you prefer?
We offer inclusive wakeboarding at Alana Beach Club in Croatia, plus Levante Beach, Vounaki, Messini and Buca Beach Clubs in Greece.
