Where to spend your New Year’s Eve is always a big question to answer. Do you go with friends, family, both, neither??
The best solution is to take them all skiing. The weather is perfectly festive and the parties tend to happen around you, so there’s no pressure to organise the ‘ultimate’ New Year’s Eve.
Here are the top four ski resorts we think you should spend your New Year’s Eve…
1. Tignes in France
Tignes throws the biggest party around. The entire resort is one big party with a massive stage on the slopes of Tignes Le Lac and DJs pumping out dance tunes to keep the mood high and light.
At the stroke of midnight, the mountains explode with colour as the fireworks light up the night sky. It’s an impressive display which receives plenty of oooo’s and aaahh’s… always a good sign! It's not just the fireworks that explode either. Champagne corks fly as the New Year arrives - you'd do well to duck!
2. Soldeu & El Tarter in Andorra
New Year in Soldeu and El Tarter is a really fun time. It’s not so much about the crazy parties and DJ sets, but more about getting together and celebrating the new year to come. The evening kicks off with a torch lit descent by the local ski and snowboard instructors at around 7pm!
After that, it’s up to you to take your pick of bars to visit. Fatties in Soldeu always puts on a lively night, but there’s also the cool Aberset bar in El Tarter with early evening tapas and then a small fireworks display at midnight.
Don’t forget to try the Spanish tradition of eating a grape at every chime of the bell (12 grapes for 12 chimes) as the countdown to New Year happens. When in Andorra…
3. Zell am See in Austria
The main square in Zell am See'stown centre is packed with New Year revellers gathering around the huge Christmas tree. A live DJ provides the tunes to keep the party going and at midnight, the local church bells start to chime and play the Viennese Waltz! It really is great night with locals and holiday makers celebrating the New Year together.
4. Livigno in Italy
Like the surrounding mountains, Livigno goes big at New Year’s Eve. All the après bars have huge parties with DJs playing until the wee hours. Stalet is a favourite with its prosecco and buffet dinner and fireworks at midnight.
The roads are all closed too as bonfires are lit on the streets to help keep revellers warm and toasty. A good place to head to if you can is Camanel and Tea Borch restaurants on the mountain. They have big dinners and terraces overlooking the town which are ideal for watching the fireworks.
